This was a special birthday present from Mick’s wife Christine. The Old River Nene in March Cambridgeshire was the chosen venue.

It was a cool overcast morning with a strong westerly wind. Mick wanted to fish on a natural water. Pole was the chosen method, cupping in chopped worms and maggots at 8 mts in the main boat channel. Weed on the bottom can be a problem here so it’s important to find a clean area.

It only took about 5 minutes for the first bite as a perch took the large piece of worm hookbait. More small fish followed by a big eel. Then a big fish was hooked and lost. The eels then moved in and only a switch to 3 maggots on the hook slowed them up and resulted in a run of silver fish, another big fish was hooked and lost near the end of the session.

We left the bank at about 5pm, despite conditions being really tough due to the strong downstream wind, Mick had caught over 10lbs.
